Bolzano

King of the mountain!
Griasti!

After having seen the flat parts of northern Italy we wanted to go to the mountains so we took a train to Bolzano in South Tyrol. Or I guess I should say Bozen because that's the German name and they speak German there even though it's in Italy. Luckily I speak German too.

In the Alps the weather was cooler than the scorching heat of the Po Valley that we came from. Nice to able to breathe again. This isn't the first I've been to the Alps. I've even climbed a mountain but I'll tell you about that some other time.

Me on a mountain meadow
From the train station we walked to the cable car station and took a cable car up to the village of Oberbozen. It was quite a long ride. Four and a half kilometres in length and almost 1000 m difference in altitude. It took 12 minutes and Julius was scared to whole way, aber natĂŒrlich I wasn't scared, I just enjoyed the view.

Hanging from a wire...
Oberbozen was a nice village and the view was amazing. It looks like a good place for hiking.

We were there for a while but when it looked like it was going to rain, we decided to take the cable car back down to Bolzano.

Going back to Bolzano
Like Bologna the old town in Bolzano has plenty of medieval arcades. We walked around until my humans found a restaurant they liked. The food was very German. Almost everything on the menu contained beer and/or sausages. Even the desert... mmm beer sorbet.

After lunch we went to say hello to Ötzi, you know the 5000 year old mummy they found in a glacier on the border between Austria and Italy. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take any pictures with him, but the museum was interesting anyway. They can tell where he was born by analysing the enamel on his teeth. Sounds like magic to me. And apparently his last meal consisted mainly of goat fat. But don't tell my cousin Jevgeni. He's very fond of goats.

Tschau!
